One of the amazing things about a Camp Bighorn summer is seeing the diverse individuals and groups that come and spend time with us for a week of adventure ministry. The past week was no exception. After an energetic and fully invested week with Junior Campers there was no rest for the weary as we immediately transitioned into a week of adventures with 3 different groups.

Quinalt Baptist Church from Kennewick, Washington brought their JR high and high school guys and gals for a great week of growth and community bonding. Their focus for the week was in seeing all of life as a part of our faith. The group was challenged in each activity to process their experience and see how the daily interactions and responses they give are a result of their formed beliefs and values. The adventure environments at Camp Bighorn are an excellent way to bring out the reality of people’s lived out beliefs because the unknown outcomes cause us to respond out of our true selves. We are thankful for the group from Quinalt Baptist and trust that the lessons they each learned here this week will stay with them as they continue to incorporate their faith with their life.

Along with Quinalt we had a group from “Guide On” based out of Missoula, Montana. “Guide On” is an organization where children who have been affected by the loss of a parent will be provided with leadership and skills training along with peers who have shared similar experiences. It was a real honor to partner with “Guide On”, serving their ministry by utilizing our trained outdoor leaders to provide leadership and wilderness experience for children who have lost their adult role models in life. Though we were only able to share a small part of our lives with them I was encouraged to see the bond of friendship grow between our staff and the children and leaders of “Guide On.” We look forward to continuing our partnership with them in the future. For more information on “Guide On” visit www.guideon.org.

Another unique camp was offered this week in the form of our first ever “Achieve Camp,” organized and created by Mary Russell. The purpose of Achieve Camps is to utilize adventure to help children with disabilities achieve new heights and experience things that may not seem possible for them. In our first ever Achieve Camp we were blessed with 4 amazing campers who certainly “achieved” new heights getting up on our low static course, riding our kid’s zip line, and participating in a lot of other activities that established new friendships and confidence. It was a tremendous success and we look forward to offering more Achieve Camps in the future.

With all that happening in one week it was at times a bit of a blur, but seeing each individual at the end of the week I am confident that it was a stretching and growing time for all involved. On to week Adventure seven!
