Welcome back Explore!

The coming of January at Camp Bighorn means the arrival of Prairie Bible College’s Explore program! We are looking forward to another two months with the program this year enjoying everything from back-country ski trips to ministry weekends. To kick start the semester the Guest Services team at Camp Bighorn went all out preparing a special Ethiopian meal!!! In typical Camp Bighorn style, the meal was created with a “choose your adventure” theme. Served over injera bread were three separate curry options: lentil, beef and chicken. Rice and a cucumber salad were served alongside the meal. Everyone had to dig right in eating the meal with only their hands. The challenge was put out by Josh Vandermeer to enter back into “community” with one another by choosing to serve each other the food by digging in, getting a good grab of food and kindly placing it into the mouth of a nearby companion.

Well not everyone took part, it was fun to see a number of hands scooping food and serving each other. Most of the food made it into the mouths of the intended receiver, although there were a few that ended in a mess!

Waat a way to celebrate another two months of community, discipleship, and germs!

A Great Weekend

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Thank you to Corvallis United Church and New Life Christian School for taking part in our Fall Practicum weekend. This weekend is designed as hands on ministry preparation for the Explore college students. As a group the college students create a weekend of adventure ministry and service every little need, from running daily chapels, serving delicious culinary delights and creating safe and growing environments on our adventure elements.

It’s a win-win scenario as both the college students and the weekend participants walk away having learned something new about themselves and about their relationship before the Lord. Enjoy the photos on Facebook and if you took part in the weekend we would love to hear from you! Post some feedback on our Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/pages/Camp-Bighorn/344035665582

Junior Camp Update II

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

Update II:

Today the forty-two finished their last full day of events, with the slip-n-slide, ziplining, and archery as some of the favourites.  I joined in with a guys’ group Rock Climbing/Zip-Lining, and was impressed by how they just lept off the zip platform (after being clipped and locked in, don’t worry Mom!) with no hesitation.  Maybe it’s because they’re 7th grade boys, maybe it’s because they’re learning about trust and courage.  Either way, it was a treat to join in on the laughter and challenges they experienced.  Hanging around the water games for some shots, it stuck out to me how close these kids had grown to their counselors.   For the guys, of course, that meant attacking theirs as he came off the slip-n-slide saying, “If you had muscles you could catch me!”  For the girls, that meant sitting by theirs and asking her opinion on everything, as well as trying to get her to give away her age.  (An unspoken Bighorn game- we never tell our campers how old we are until the end of the week).

One of my favourite things to catch in photos is real laughter and smiles.   I think it’s a good sign, because I have captured so many this week!   Watching your kids grow has blessed me.  Even in just four days, they are all more encouraging and respectful to each other than at the beginning.  I think true growth happens when we challenge ourselves, step out of our comfort zone, and our “underneath personality” comes out.  Whether challenging themselves was doing the Low Static blindfolded, or climbing a foot up the rock, each did.  As we wrap up Junior Camp, I put the finishing touches on the slideshow and give my mugs back to the kitchen, I realize this has been one of the best weeks of the summer.  Thanks for letting us have your kids for the week.  God continues to bless and teach in unexpected ways.  -Anjeli

Update I:

“This is the definition of awesomeness!” ; “Why are they called belly-buttons if there’s no button in it?”;  “I did it (Low Static) twice!  The first time was hard, the second time was easy.”;  ”I did jumping jacks on the raft because I was cold!”

Things are going great!  Groups have already had exciting water experiences, courageous height challenges, and, of course, plenty of sweet games! (What would Junior Camp be without water balloons and Bighorn’s own version of “Minute to Win It”?!)  The chapel crew has gotten very creative, which included using two stacked rafts as a whale mouth to swallow Jonah in their latest skit!   Whether they’re singing “The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything”, or “This Little Light Of Mine”, God’s love is being shown and taught.  Tonight they will get the traditional experience of Bighorn’s mudpit; which includes team tug-of-war!  Pictures will definitely follow!  Today I had the opportunity to go rafting with a girls’ group and shoot footage for our Junior Camp Promo video.  I was so impressed by these young people’s desire to learn and experience things.  One girl asked me about river features and science the whole time!  It is fun to share what parts I know about water safety and river knowledge with such eager learners.  Well…the mud pit is calling me and my camera…until next time!  -Anjeli

Hello Everyone!

My name is Anjeli, and I will be keeping you up to date this week with Junior Camp!  Being on the Admin Team gives me a unique perspective as I peek out from behind my camera and witness the awesome experiences these kids are having.  Coming through the dinner line for a hot Sloppy Joe, I heard one child say, “They have the best food here!”  Indeed, the dinner was very good, but it is more the staff and their attitude as they put a tong-full of fries on your plate that makes it  ”best”.

It all kicked off last night with a tasty dinner, inviting chapel, and energetic game.  This week they will be learning about how we are made in God’s image, marked with His mark; and in that how we are protected from evil.  I am excited to see how they will present these deep values to 6th-8th graders, with no doubt that they will do so well.  Today groups are Rafting, going through the Low Static, Rock Climbing, Archery and Riflery, and an island adventure called “Lost Cause”.   The “island” is actually a penninsula on the river, but it works all the same; it’s a pretty sweet place.  I love all the new, exciting, challenging, and funny things that sprout from the events we do here, and look forward to sharing them with you.    -Anjeli

Adventure 4 Recap

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

ADVENTURE 4 saw the start of our Junior High and High School camp. We had an incredible opportunity this week to work with some local kids and some who were from further away who were not a part of any specific group.

Being in a new environment where relationships were not formed was initially the greatest challenge for each camper to face. There was plenty of diversity and each individual had to ask themselves how do I relate with someone who is different from me? What draws us together as a group? What does it mean for me to trust you? What is the basis of trust? These questions became the bedrock for new relationships to be established. As the week went on CJ Ziomek, a facilitator for one of the groups noticed that his group was developing a respect for each other and those around them. Mike Zdenek, another facilitator noticed how his group began to adopt a servants heart towards one another. Instead of rushing to the start of the food line at meal times his group practiced patiently waiting while others grabbed their food first. We are thankful for each camper who was willing to step into the adventure that this week brought and thankful for the ways that they processed through their challenges. We hope you can take the lessons learned this week back into your schools, homes and communities.

Joining alongside our Jr/Sr High Camp was a group from Star Peak Crossing, a residential home for troubled teens in Thompson Falls, MT. This week was the first of a number of adventures that Star Peak Crossing is planning on having with us over the course of this summer. Caleb Sapp, the Venture Coordinator noticed some great steps of growth in Star Peak during their week here. Specifically, one individual was challenged to move beyond the personal doubts that typically hold him back. When faced with challenges it is all to easy to make a valid reason that has been confirmed by past experience as an excuse from stepping forward. It takes courage to choose something new and “venture” out into the unknown. As this individual did this he experienced new joy in being who God has made him to be. All of these moments are seeds and we look forward to the next opportunity to work with Star Peak Crossing in order to water those seeds to new growth.
